After coming back from Christmas vacation and trying to make it the Freedom writer’s return to school.
When they return they find out that they have won The Spirit of Anne Frank Award.
The award honors “those who have followed the courage of their convictions to step forward and actively confront anti-semitism, racism, prejudice and bias related violence in their community”(pg 222).
They Freedom writers start a fundraiser so they can go to New York to accept the award.
Many TV shows and magazines called Ms. Gruwell so that they can talk about the Freedom Writers but she denied all of them until Connie Chung called her.
Why didn’t Ms. Gruwell accept the TV and magazines offer to help them get to New York?
Why won’t the board allow all of the freedom writers to accept the award?
What is GUESS??
What did the Freedom writer’s do after high school?
Cavort- to bound or prance about.
Tattoo- a rapid, rhythmic drumming or rapping.
doyen- the senior member of a body or group
In the final term of the senior year the Freedom writers are getting ready for graduation and tell of their success throughout their four years of High school.

Freedom Writers Diary
Ms. Gruwell is fighting to have the freedom writers as seniors.
Ms. G and Don Parris created a nonprofit organization called the Tolerance Education Foundation to help the college bound Freedom writers to pay for college.
Ms. G’s primary focus is this year is to have the freedom writer’s focus on college and their futures.
Many of the Freedom Writers don’t even know about the SAT’s and what it takes to get into college.
All of the Freedom writer’s are feeling the weight of financial burden.
Were there any scholarships available to them?
Did the school give any guidance to their students about college?
Did the segregate the help?
How could all of this be caused by busing?
elicit-to draw or bring out or forth; educe; evoke
chagrin- acute vexation or embarrassment

During junior year met with Miep Gies and Zlata.
Zlata was only 15 when she met with the Ms. G and her students.
The class decided to name themselves the Freedom Writers.
They named themselves after a group of Civil Rights activists in the 1960s who decided to challenge segregation in the south.
The Freedom Riders integrated their bus and traveled from Washington, D.C., through down south. Their goal was to change segregated interstate travel.
The Freedom Writers fought to get Ms. G back for their senior year.
How did Ms. G meet Miep Gies?
How did she meet Zlata Filipovic when she visited Europe?
How did the freedom writers talk the school board into letting Ms. G be their teacher for their final year?
What made Ms. G decide to turn all of the dairies into one book?
Cathartic- evacuating the bowels
diarist- a person who keeps a diary
gravid- pregnant

Freedom Writers Diary
During the sophomore year Ms. Gruwell began to realize that some of the teachers had it out for her and talked about the students in the teacher’s lounge.
Ms. Gruwell had bought books for the kids about teens in the holocaust and other places of genocide. These books included: The Wave by Todd Strasser, Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, and Night by Elie Wiesel.
The students compared their lives to Anne, Elie, and Zlata.
Because of all the teachers were against her Erin interviewed for a new position at another high school but the principal stopped her and talked her out of it.
One of the students invites Zlata Filipovic to the school to talk to them about her experiences and everything she went through.
What did the other teachers have against Erin?
What did Ms. G do that was so special or different from other teachers?
Why aren’t the names of any of the students in the diaries?
Where there still racial conflicts in the classroom?
monotonously- lacking in variety; tediously unvarying
fatalistic- the acceptance of all things and events as inevitable; submission to fate
Logistics- the branch of military science and operations dealing with the procurement, supply, and maintenance of equipment, with the movement, evacuation, and hospitalization of personnel, with the provision of facilities and services, and with related matters.
During sophomore year the students learned more about the genocides and even started a read-a-thon.

Freedom Writers Diary
The book begins during the freshman year in the fall of 1994.
Due to busing and an outbreak in gang activity, a large majority of the white students had left.
Blacks, Latinos, and Asians made up a large majority of the student body.
On Ms. Gruwell’s she experienced a racial situation between a black student and a Latino one.
There was a lot of racial tension between the different racial groups of the school.
Where did all of this racial tension start?
How does this tension affect clubs or sports teams?
How have Freshman in High school not heard of the holocaust?
Why does it seem like as soon as Ms. Gruwell shows up all of this racial tension is gone?
Propaganda- the spreading of ideas, information, or rumor for the purpose of helping or injuring an institution, a cause, or a person
integral- necessary to the completeness of the whole
anonymity- an anonymous person
The first couple of chapters are about Ms. Gruwell’s adjustment to her new class and their metamorphosis into kids who actually care about her and realize that she is trying to help them.
