Chapter 3

Eminem was one of maybe two white rappers who made it big in the Hip-Hop industry.
Unlike the other rapper (Vanilla Ice) Eminem spoke truthfully about his past and had the skills to back it up.
Many people labeled Eminem as a racist interloper after some tapes of his old battle raps were found with him using racial slurs.
Eminem fought through the case and launched his own music label.
All three of Eminem’s albums were big hits.

What made Eminem such a big hit?
Why did people compare him to a modern day Elvis Presley?
Why were people so hostile to Eminem entering the rap game?
Why were “black” radio stations so hesitant to play rap music?

Visceral- characterized by or proceeding from instinct rather than intellect
Voracious- craving or consuming large quantities of food
Itinerant- traveling from place to place, esp. on a circuit, as a minister, judge, or sales representative

(Irony) The fact that N.W.A made their songs for black youths and for the “streets” but the majority of their albums were being bought by White youths.
(Metaphor) “For decades pop music has been a clarion call to arms in young people’s uprising against parental and adult authority.”

In Chapter 3 Mr. Watkins talks about the obstacles Eminem had to face to a name for him and how a large majority of Hip-hop music was being bought by white youths.
